The PalmIslands are also known as The Palm Dubai and The Palms. These are the world's three largest man-made islands. The name of these islands are The Palm Jumeirah,The Palm Jebel Ali and The Palm Deira. These are being built on the coast of the emirate of Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The PalmIslands are also regarded as 'The Eighth Wonder of the World'.
Al Nakheel Properties (Nakheel Corporation) is handling this grand project. It will increase Dubai's shoreline by 120km (72 miles) and create a large number of residential, leisure, and entertainment areas. The idea was first announced in May 2002. The shape of these wonderful resort islands is artificial palm tree.With the completion of these two manmade resort islands, Dubai is believed to maintain its position as a premium tourist destination.
The Palm Jumeirah and The Palm Jebel Ali, these two Dubai islands will be built in the shape of date palm trees. They will consist of a trunk; a crown with 17 fronds; and a surrounding crescent island - the back of which forms the breakwater. Collectively, the island will support more than 60 luxury hotels, 4,000 exclusive residential villas ,1,000 unique water homes, 5,000 shoreline apartments, marinas, water theme parks, restaurants, shopping malls, sports facilities, health spas, cinemas and various dive sites. The residential villas, water homes and shoreline apartments will be for sale purposes.
The development of the project was based on comprehensive research and its practical feasibilty. The methodical planning and exhaustive feasibility studies were conducted for this grand project four years in Dubai. It was also ensured that the islands would not disrupt the environment.
The development of The Palm Island is divided into three important stages. In the first stage, there will be construction of the land foundations. It will involve sand transfer and rock placement. The second stage will involve the building of infrastructure and services. Also in this stage, the 300 meter (990 feet) bridges will be constructed that will link the islands to the mainland. In the final stage, there will be the construction of homes, townhouses, and apartments.
The Jumeirah Palm island is primarily a retreat and residential area for living, relaxation, and leisure. It will contain themed boutique hotels, three types of villas and shoreline apartments. Three types of Villas are named Signature Villas, Garden Homes and Town Homes. In June 2001, The construction started on this island.It is expected to be completed by late 2005, early 2006.The Palm Jumeirah Residence, Palm Terrace, and Atlantis, The Palm are some of the important properties available for sale on the Palm Jumeirah.
The Palm Jebel Ali is more of an entertainment destination. It is both for adults and children. It will have great attraction for both the local residents and tourists. The Palm Jebel Ali island is larger in size as compared to JumeirahPalmIsland. It is almost 50% larger than The Palm Jumeirah. It includes six marinas, a 'SeaVillage', a water theme park and water homes built on stilts between the fronds and the crescent. The construction on this wonderful island was started in October 2003 and there are expectations that it will be completed by the end of 2007.
The crown prince of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum announced that a third man-made PalmIsland will be built on reclaimed land off the coast of Dubai's Deirah beach. He made this announcement on the October 5, 2004.
The Palm Deira will be the largest of the three palm islands. Its area will include 14km (8.4 miles) in length and 8.5km (5.1 miles) in width. It will contain residential property, marinas, shopping malls, sports facilities, and clubs. The residential area will be located on the 41 fronds and will contain 8,000 two-storey villas/town houses. These houses will be in three distinct styles - Premier Villas, Grand Villas and Vista Town Homes.
