It will cover a total area of 9 kilometers (5.4 miles) in length and 6 kilometers (3.6 miles) in width, surrounded by an oval shaped breakwater. There is 50 to 100 metres (164 to 328 feet) of water between each island. It will take 80 million cubic metres of sand and rock to construct, add 120 kilometres to the coastline, and be clearly visible from the moon

Each island is expected to fetch upwards of $US7 million. Each island will be sold to selected private developers and are expected to have pricing beginning at US$ 6.85 million. This is a grand project worth of US$ 1.8 billion. There are some rich individuals who have already purchased the costly Islands The World Islands. Sir Richard Branson from the Great Britain is one of those rich individual who is the proud owner of one of these wonderful islands.

Private buyers are enticed with the Crusoe-like fantasy that "the footprints in the sand belong only to you and your family," and property developers will be given the chance to construct whole new residential communities "for weekenders and year round residents." A third of The World has already been sold.

All 300 islands will only be accessible by marine or air transport, with world-class marinas to berth boats, yachts and cruise liners. Nakheel will integrate a series of waterways, canals and lakes to enhance the overall design.

The islands will be built in the shape of the world map and consist of two protective breakwaters on the outer perimeters to provide shelter from long and cross-shore waves. The outer breakwater will be a submerged reef and the inner breakwater will be above water

Nakheel will hand over the islands to the investors once the land has been reclaimed. All infrastructure and construction will be up to the individual investors who will have the freedom to create their own personal vision on the islands for private or commercial use.
